Unique Fall Color Ideas

Unique Fall Color Ideas

Don't you love Fall? Warm colors, cool weather and the beginning of the holidays. It's also time to start prepping your home for the season. I've put together a list for autumn color inspiration that goes with the mood, but strays for the usual.

Here are 5 great options:

Vibrant Oranges

Our tip – use a more traditional color scheme with oranges, browns and yellows, then mix with a fun color like teal for a more contemporary twist to the traditional. When in doubt? Consult a color wheel!

Trendy Marsala

The much debated “Pantone Color of the Year” (see our blog post “A Case for Marsala”) is a great shade for Fall. Dark, elegant and  a bit vintage while still being trendy. A few statement pieces is all you’ll need!

Mysterious Purples

If you are trying to avoid orange like the plague, purple is a fantastic alternative. Not only does it go great with shades like red, but the dark tone adds a cozy feel to a room – which is what fall is all about! Perfect if you have a flair for drama.

 Deep Greens

If you want something a bit different than the norm, but love the “earthy” feel of autumn décor – go with a green color scheme. Add a few small pops of orange, and you have the perfect autumn alternative without looking like you are ready for spring.

Midnight Blues

You don’t have to hide away your relaxing blues just because fall is taking over. Blue Hues actually mix perfectly with warm autumn shades, and can give your décor a bit of a “boho” feel.

Interior Design Trend: Grey, the New Neutral

Interior Design Trend: Grey, the New Neutral

Looking for a neutral tone, but want something a little different than the usual browns? Try a nice grey. With so many shades – from a dark and dramatic to soft and serene – grey is the perfect color for a fun new home makeover.

Here are 5 examples of the cool new shade in use:

The newest Kelly Tivey Interior Design project, shows an urban-chic mix of dark and light grays, mixed with dark hardwood and quartz slabs in kitchen for a bold contrast.

A great example of gray and silver shades cohabiting with different shades of wood, and greenery. Surprising to some, but this color looks great in eclectic-inspired spaces!

If you’re looking to update your home and want a sleek and beautiful color, using a light grey as your primary color will give your home a clean, timeless look – plus it’s a fantastic alternative to the usual beige.

If you do want to give your room more of that “edgy” vibe, go for a darker grey with some boldly colored statement pieces. Grey’s allow for your accessories to take center stage and can give your home a contemporary feel.

Love the modern twist on this old barn-style home. If you aren’t completely ready to forgo the beige, the two colors can live together in harmony.

What do you think of this cool and trendy shade? Let us know in a comment!

Designer Pro Tips: Choosing the Right Window Treatments

Designer Pro Tips: Choosing the Right Window Treatments

Choosing the right window treatments can feel like a daunting chore for the untrained eye, but it’s one of the most important design decisions you’ll make. The right window treatment can transform a space. It’s important to consider not only the design, color and hardware that catches your eye, but to carefully consider the purpose of the room you are putting them in, and the shape and size of the windows in that room.

Here are 5 examples of windows treatments available to you and when to use them:

Pleated Shades

A unique combo of aesthetics and function. Pleated shades are perfect for a classic home. Simple, elegant, family friendly and don’t take away from the impact of the décor.

Plantation Shutters

Have a room that requires a bit more privacy? Plantation Shutters are the perfect solution and still let in lots of natural lighting. Their versatility and simplicity makes them look great in almost any room, but can be especially useful in bathrooms and bedrooms. These window treatments often sell with the home, as they are almost universally well-liked.

Sheer Drapes

If privacy isn’t an issue and you want to accentuate the natural lighting of your home, sheer drapes are a beautiful, elegant and economical option. Best suited for common area windows as they don't allow for much privacy!

 Long Drapery

Long draperies offer a classic and beautiful look and give you an array of fun design choices like density of fabric, fabric type, color, length and width. Can be used on almost any window type, but be warned, some windows may require a bit of customization. If that’s the case, consult a professional!

Have a mid-century modern home and need a dramatic and creative window treatment? Try roller shades. They come in a fun collection of colors and patterns – much like the draperies would – but offer a more modern and less heavy look. Best suited for average sized windows, but can be custom fit for larger.

 More to come!
