Interior Design Clash: Merging Two Different Styles

Interior Design Clash: Merging Two Different Styles

Last week we covered some awesome design styles (see here). Unfortunately, when sharing a home with someone else – it’s bound to happen – sometimes our vision of the “perfect home” doesn’t perfectly match theirs. One person’s haven could be another person’s nightmare.
As an interior designer, it’s my job to figure out how to merge these styles to not only nurture the space, but the people occupying it.

Here are 3 examples of perfectly matched design styles!

Modern, Meet Traditional

Does your significant other dream of white walls, stainless steel and natural light, while you prefer warm tones, an old-world feel and cozy lighting?

Modern

Traditional

The happy medium? A cool mix of whites and neutrals, exposed beams and modern appliances. A trendy yet, traditional space that makes everyone happy.

The Industrial Bohemian

Industrial and Bohemian may seem completely unparalleled, but both design styles aim for uniqueness and an eclectic mix of furniture and accessories. Mixing the two just takes a bit of creativity.

Bohemian

Industrial

The best of both worlds! Exposed brick, plant-life, art, unique light fixtures and Moroccan furniture make for a fantastic blend!

Contemporary and Shabby Chic

Contemporary and Shabby Chic are practically antonyms. While contemporary design is all about the current “trends” and changing with the times, Shabby chic interiors are all about the wear and aged look.

Contemporary

Shabby Chic

The balance? A beautiful blend of organic patterns, flowers, and contemporary accessories.

Which style blend do you like best?

Stay Inspired.

What is Your Interior Design Style?

What is Your Interior Design Style?

For interior designers, creating beautiful interiors is broken down like a science…

It’s our job to find the perfect balance between your personality, the layout of your home, what the market has to offer, custom pieces we can make with a little elbow grease, and how all of these are going to come together to create the perfect space.
The most unique and eye-catching designs come from a perfectly executed collaboration of all those things, but the most important element is always YOU. It’s simple – what design elements make you happy? What can I incorporate that is going to make you excited every time you walk into your home?
The first step is figuring out your design style. Here is a breakdown of some of the most popular.
Modern
What is it? A modern space is sleek and clutter free. Chaos be gone! Modern designs primarily focus on function and organization.
Design Elements: Chrome, glass, concrete, geometric shapes, open space and simple edges and curves. Instead of trinkets, modern spaces accentuate art and artfully placed accent colors.

Bohemian
What is it?  A bohemian interior is artistic, eclectic and avant-garde. Say no to minimalism Perfect for those who are a bit unconventional and fancy-free. If you and your local thrift store owner are on a first name basis, you may be a bohemian!
Design Elements: Mixed patterns and textures, rugs, lanterns and accessories. Canopies and Moroccan inspired accessories work beautifully in bohemian spaces. Although boho spaces don’t follow conventional rules, a great designer can add some artistic vision to avoid design chaos!

Traditional

What is it? Traditional interior designs are about simple elegance, comfort and a luxurious feel.  It’s all about giving your home that “homey” feel.
Design Elements: Carved moldings, woodwork, graceful curves, and sturdy furniture. Traditional homes are “warm”. Large, comfy furniture is often used. Traditional interiors bring back the most endearing designs of the old-world.
Transitional
What is it? Transitional design takes key elements from both traditional and modern interior design – a happy medium, so to speak.  Classically contemporary!
Design Elements: The cool thing about transitional design is you can take elements from both modern and traditional styles and blend them together. Warm neutrals, comfortable but updated furniture, and fun textures to break up the muted tones.
Industrial
What it is? San Francisco hipsters unite! Industrial style has hit a high in recent years. Utilitarian, unique and eye-catching. This design style is inspired by manufacturing, mechanics and raw, unfinished interiors.
Design Elements: Exposed brick walls and pipes, urban furniture and metal lighting make up the industrial style. Industrial homes are often no-fuss and void of too many patterns to better accentuate the unique space.
What’s your design style?
Stay Inspired.

Interior Design for Corporate Rental Spaces

Angela Row Houses: A Kelly Tivey Interior Design Project

Angela Row Houses are four corporate rental homes located in historic downtown Pleasanton. Each home was designed to reflect distinctively different design themes and directions. A fun design undertaking that I had the pleasure of working on.

This project perfectly showcases how different homes with similar architectural styling can be with a touch of creativity. It’s all about creating a mood and finding a home’s distinct personality. The best part? When choosing to go with a professionally designed rental space, you are likely to get a fabulous return on investment.

Check out the four completed designs:

446 Peters Avenue | Pleasanton Manor| Romantic Colors

A beautiful home with a more classically romantic color scheme and organic accessories. A spa-reminiscent retreat.

458 Peters Avenue | Haberdashery | Old World Meets New

You can see the drastic shift from the first home. A more eclectic, curated space with a neutral scheme.

231 W Angela St | Uptown Urban | Strikingly Modern

A hip, modern take that brings a San Francisco vibe to downtown Pleasanton. Full of pops of fun and bold colors and accessories.

231 W Angela St | Pasadena Chic | Beautiful Blues

Tranquil blues and uniquely artistic accessories were used throughout this space to coordinate with some of the blue features, like the stained glass window.

The fun part is these home’s cater to a wide variety of personal styles, whether you’re a quiet romantic, or an urban socialite.
